It may not be a big deal in Kentucky or at the University of Kentucky, but to the University of Portland Pilots, it’s a HUGE announcement…

For the First Time in school history, the University of Kentucky will play a game in the state of Oregon.

Officially announced today, the University of Kentucky will play the University of Portland on November 19, 2010 in the Rose Garden (home of the NBA Portland Trailblazers) as a warm up game prior to the Maui Classic. This is part of a three-game contract which has Portland at Rupp Arena in 2012 and 2013.

Coach Calipari was quoted:

“When I arrived at Kentucky and first looked at the schedule, we immediately started talking about the possibility of breaking up our trip to Maui by playing a game on the West Coast,” UK Coach John Calipari said  in the news release. “Portland gives us the opportunity to play in a great basketball city with a great venue, and more importantly, gives Terrence Jones a chance to go home and play in front of his family and friends.”

Jones, an incoming freshman, is a native of Portland.

Portland is a member of the West Coast Conference which placed two teams in the NCAA Tournament last year, Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga.

The Pilots were 20-9 last year while getting big wins over UCLA and the then No. 16 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers.

I wonder if this was part of the enticement to help bring Jones to Kentucky? Hum. Never know and truly, it doesn’t matter. Jones is a Cat and the Big Blue is set to invade Oregon for the first time in school history…
