Kentucky Basketball – As It Stands NOW…

The 2009 Freshman class is one not soon to be forgotten. Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Orton and Hood made an impact on the Big Blue Nation and will be part of a possible first with five teammates being selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, all in the same year.

Move over Class of 09, here comes the Class of 2010 and Head Coach John Calipari. With the signing of six Players, five freshman and one Junior, Kentucky lands a class only topped by the Landing on the Moon in 1969…

Here is how the Cats stand as of this moment |

Class of 2010 |

  • Eloy Vargus | Junior | Center | No. 26 Player (Class of 2008)
  • Brandon Knight | Freshman | Point Guard | No. 6 Player
  • Enes Kanter | Freshman | Forward | No. 3 Player
  • Doron Lamb | Freshman | Shooting Guard | No. 21 Player
  • Stacey Poole | Freshman | Forward | No. 33 Player
  • Terrence Jones | Freshman | Forward | No. 13 Player

Returning From 2009-10 Team |

  • Darius Miller | Junior | Guard
  • Josh Harrellson | Senior | Center
  • Jon Hood | Sophmore | Guard
  • Darnell Dodson | Junior | Shooting Guard
  • DeAndre Liggins | Junior | Guard

Walk On Commit |

  • Jarrod Polson | Freshman | Guard

Kentucky, if all commits sign, will use 11 of the 13 available scholarships. Coach Calipari has stated that he would like to use 10 or 11. Why? Well, if you recall, he already has commitments from a couple of young men that are pretty darn good by the name of Michael Gilchrist (No. 1 Player – Class of 2011) and Marquis Teague (No. 2 Player – Class of 2011). To top that, two more of the Top Five in the 2011 Class have Kentucky on their list of possibles.

By staying at the 11 scholarship mark, it ensures he has at least three scholarships to award for the 2011 year with the departure of Josh Harrellson, the one Senior. If the Cats experience another one and done, which I believe they might with Kanter and possibly Knight and Jones, it opens the door for what would possibly be another No. 1 overall recruiting class for Coach Calipari and the Big Blue.

One thing the Nation better get used to, as long as Calipari is at the helm, is buying new jerseys on almost a yearly basis as the one or two and done will be a habit at The University.

One scenario to think about is Senior day. Keep recruiting top-notch Players and Senior Day may become a thing of the past…
