Larry Vaught of Vaughtsviews.com provides some great insight to Morgan Newton and Ryan Mossakowski and their approach to the 2010-11 season.

Here are some excerpts from his article:

“One was smiling and soaking in everything he could before he left Commonwealth Stadium. The other one was visibly disappointed and had to struggle to smile even when talking to his family.”

“Kentucky quarterbacks Ryan Mossakowski and Morgan Newton both are battling Mike Hartline for the No. 1 spot this spring. The difference is that this is Hartline’s fourth spring practice while Newton and Mossakowski are doing it for the first time.”

Comments and insights from Ryan Mossakowski:

For Mossakowski, just getting to play at Commonwealth Stadium Saturday in front of fans and media members was a step forward — and left him smiling even though he was only 5-for-11 passing for 88 yards with two interceptions.

“There is a whole lot of that going on, which is awesome,” said Mossakowski after the scrimmage. “If I have questions, I will ask any of the quarterbacks. It’s awesome to have that competition and all those emotions flying, but still we are all best friends.

“But it was beautiful to just be out here. There were so many emotions flying around. In my mind, I knew this was big. If you treat it like a normal day, and that’s how I did it, then after the first snap you are fine and just go play and have fun.”

Newton obviously didn’t have as much fun even though he was 8-for-16 passing for 116 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. He has more pressure on him because he knows what it is like to start and many figured he was the pre-practice favorite to win the job after getting the experience he did last year.

Comments and insights from Morgan Newton:

“It was pretty good in some spots, but still a lot of work to do,” Newton said. “Just getting in the rhythm was kind of tough. All three of us being jerked in and out.”

“It is tough, especially when you fight to be a leader and lead the guys. Sometimes you get yanked back with three of us getting reps and everybody fighting for a position. But you have to make the best of it,” Newton said.

Newton said he was “inconsistent” with his passing and has to concentrate more on not making bad plays.

“Experience has helped a lot. You pick up some things and learn from experiences from last year and there is more that you add and try to expand on, and that sometimes makes it harder,” Newton said.

Kentucky is loaded with QB talent. the key is development of what’s available and keeping the guys around. With Newton being one year ahead of Mossakowski, it really gives UK a super outlook for the future.
