Spring Football Practice Update

Jeff Drummond of Kentucky Ink with an update on Spring Practice with the Cats…

Here are some highlights and the link to the full article..

“Biggest news of the day was DeQuin Evans, who went down Saturday with an apparent knee injury in the 11-on-11, full-contact drills. Joker says it was just a scare, and he should only be out a couple of days.”

“Joker said he liked the pace and intensity of today’s practice MUCH better than Saturday. There was some emotion out there. Even had our first fisticuffs of the spring between WR Brian Adams and CB Martavius Neloms. The coaches didn’t seem to mind. I think they liked the passion.”

UKBBN Point of View | Personally, I LOVE the fact that they are getting after it. Teammates are exactly that, teammates. The fact that they are getting after it outside of the play is healthy, as long as Joker and the staff contain the control. You have to love the intensity and the competition.

“During a 9-on-7 inside running drill, freshman Justin Henderson (who ought to be walking thru a HS hallway right now thinking about his prom) made a great play off a block by the tight end and dropped RB Jonathan George dead in his tracks. You can really see some high potential in this kid as he continues to learn and gain confidence. Later, in the 11-on-11s, he recorded two sacks.” (Based on the article, it appears Henderson might have been the most impressive D player of the day.)

“Today was the worst 7-on-7 for the offense I’ve seen through four practices. They did not complete anything longer than 10 yards during a 10-plus minute drill. None of the QB’s threw the ball particularly well, and when they did, they were victimized by some drops. Also, to be fair, wind was a factor again. It’s been extremely gusty in Lexington of late.”

UKBBN Point of View | The QB issue could move over into an on-going battle in the Fall. Coach’s commented they wanted to try to lock down a starter in the Spring, but I don’t know if that will be accomplished. From all of my readings, there doesn’t appear to be a stand out right now, but that could change in a matter of a few days.
