Lady Cats Defeat #1 Seed Nebraska – Move to the Elite 8

On a weekend when the Big Blue Nation mourned the loss of an Elite 8 game to West Virginia, the Lady Cats reminded us all that UK isn’t just a Men’s basketball school as they upset the #1 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers and won their record-breaking 28th game.

In a game dominated by Kentucky’s relentless defense, the Cats absolutely took it to the taller Huskers in every area of the game.

A’dia Mathies, Victoria Dunlap and Keyla Snowden powered the Cats beyond the favored Huskers.

Mathies, the former Kentucky Miss Basketball from Iroquois High School, scored 17 of her 21points in the second half, shooting 50% from the field and 75% from 3-point land. She also gathered 4 boards, created 3 steals and had 2 blocks as she was named Player of the Game.

Dunlap continued her amazing year with 18 points, 7 boards and 3 assist while Snowden pitched in 13 points and 4 boards.

The Cats held the All American candidate Kelsey Griffin to 15 points (6 in the second half) and 12 boards as the Cats truly shut the big Center/Forward down.

The Cats created 15 turnovers off of 10 steals and in a game where the Cats were out sized, they won the critical battle of the glass with 33 total and 11 offensively, compared to only 20 total and 5 offensively for the Huskers.

Nebraska made a desperate run at the end to close the gap to seven with 0:53 remaining but would never score again as Dunlap made two free throws and the Cats closed the deal to move on to the Elite 8.

The Cats will face a stubborn Oklahoma (26-10) team who defeated the #2 seed Notre Dame, 77-72 in overtime.

Oklahoma only utilized seven total Players and was led by Stevenson’s 21 and Olajuwon’s 20, and yes, she is the daughter of the NBA Star Hakeem Olajuwon.

If OU only plays 7 players against the Cats, it should give UK the advantage, as OU should begin to tire, especially after a game that went to just two days before…

Congratulations to Coach Matthew Mitchell and the Lady Cats…
